The Federal Government has release a health advice regarding the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, XEC, urging health institutions nationwide to enhance their alert systems. This directive follows the variant’s rapid spread, with cases reported in 29 countries after it was first identified in Australia says FG.
Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, revealed this development in a letter to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors.
Dated December 5, 2024, the letter emphasizes the potential danger of the XEC variant, which exhibits a ‘growth advantage’ over current COVID-19 strains.
Dr. Anuma stated, “I have been directed to notify you about the recently identified XEC COVID-19 variant, first reported in Australia and now confirmed in 29 countries worldwide.
“It is important to note that this variant demonstrates a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its possible effects on public health.”
The letter emphasizes the need for increased vigilance and prompt action in healthcare facilities, particularly for patients exhibiting symptoms resembling COVID-19.
Medical directors are advised to activate emergency alert systems, improve monitoring procedures, and ensure timely sharing of important information with the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities.
However he also added that “Hospitals should immediately activate alert systems to closely monitor patients with symptoms similar to COVID-19.”
Therefore, encouraging health facilities to work closely to monitor the spread of the variant, evaluate its effects, and take effective steps to control it.
He then concluded ” We urge your committee to work with all relevant stakeholders and the FG to share essential information about this strain and strengthen monitoring systems.
Sharing timely data with stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be crucial for developing effective response strategies.
