Former Cross River Governor Laments Betrayal by Successor, Vows to Focus on Private Life

The former Governor of Cross River State Prof. Ben Ayade CON. has expressed deep disappointment and frustration over what he described as a deliberate attempt to undermine his legacy by his successor. Speaking in confidence to close political allies ahead of the 2027 elections, the former governor lamented that all his efforts to ensure a smooth transition of power to the Southern Senatorial District were now being repaid with betrayal.

According to him, “I have been abandoned, and all my efforts wasted. What is the need for killing yourself to produce a successor?”

Ayade cited several instances that left him feeling sidelined and disrespected, starting with the alleged orchestration of media attacks on his person by aides of the current governor. He also decried the targeting of his family members under the guise of reclaiming government assets.

Furthermore, Ayade accused the current administration of reneging on prior agreements, including promises to appoint loyalists recommended by him into strategic positions. Despite rounds of assurances, these appointments never materialized, leaving him disillusioned.

“I feel highly betrayed,” the former governor reportedly told his allies. “But I have asked my supporters to remain steadfast and ensure that the current Governor emerge as the party’s flag bearer come 2027.”

Reflecting on his current status, he added, “For me, I will focus on my private business and continue minding my own affairs. When last did you see me at any state function or government event? Unlike my colleagues in other states who are being carried along by their successors, I’ve been completely shut out.”

The former governor’s remarks signal growing tension within the state’s political structure and may shape alliances and narratives as the 2027 elections approach.
