A political storm is brewing in Bekwarra as Theresa Ushie has publicly alleged intimidation, coercion, and the forgery of a resignation letter in what she describes as a calculated attempt to silence the voice of her people.
According to Ushie, on Friday, 12 December 2025, at exactly 12:41 p.m., she received two phone calls from the Secretary of Council, pressuring her to resign her position. She said she was informed that the directive allegedly came from the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly.
“I refused,” Ushie stated. “I chose principle over fear. I refused to betray the mandate freely given to me by the people of Bekwarra.”
She alleged that following her refusal to bow to pressure, those behind the move resorted to falsehood by fabricating a resignation letter and hurriedly submitting it to the Secretary of Council in an attempt to create the impression that she had stepped aside.
Describing the act as both cruel and careless, Ushie pointed out what she called a revealing error in the forged document.
“In their desperation to silence the voice of our people, they could not even spell the proud name Bekwarra. They wrote Bakwarra,” she said. “That single error speaks volumes. It exposes outsiders to our struggle, enemies of our identity, and actors who hold our people in contempt.”
Ushie strongly condemned the alleged actions, insisting that they go beyond politics.
“This is not politics. This is intimidation.
This is not governance. This is oppression.
This is not leadership. This is a calculated attempt to steal the voice of Bekwarra.”
Reaffirming her resolve, she declared that the people of Bekwarra would not be cowed or coerced.
“Bekwarra is not for sale. Bekwarra is not afraid. Bekwarra will not be bullied into silence,” she stated.
She warned that the alleged scheme targets more than her person, describing it as an assault on the collective will of her constituents.
“What they seek to destroy is not just one individual, but the hope, dignity, and future of our people,” Ushie said. “And that is a line that must never be crossed.”
The allegations have sparked growing public interest, with many calling for transparency and a thorough clarification of the circumstances surrounding the alleged resignation letter.
