Kaduna State Revenue Agency Seals Banks, Businesses Over ₦1.7 Billion Debt
The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) has sealed off several banks and business premises over unpaid Land Use Charge (LUC) debts totaling ₦1.7 billion. Among those affected are Zenith Bank, Keystone Bank, Unity Bank, FCMB, and the Bank of Agriculture.
In addition, other premises sealed include Chicken Republic, Forte Oil, the New Nigeria Development Company, GT Bank’s parking lot, A.G. Leventis building, and Hamdala Hotel, which owes ₦115 million in LUC debts.
Why was the Banks Shut Down?
Aysha Ahmad, KADIRS’ board secretary and legal adviser, stated that the action was taken under the provisions of Section 104 of the Personal Income Tax Act and Section 24 (1-3) of the Kaduna State Tax Codification and Consolidation Law, 2020 (as amended).
Ms. Ahmad explained that the land-based revenue liabilities were determined by the State Geographic Information Service (KADGIS). Despite demand notices being issued to the defaulters, there was no positive response, necessitating enforcement.
“We have resorted to enforcement to recover what is due to the state,” she said.
When Would the Banks Come Back Up?
The exercise, which is expected to last a week, is backed by a court order authorizing the closure and takeover of the affected properties until all outstanding liabilities are settled.
Ms. Ahmad urged taxpayers to comply voluntarily, emphasizing that the enforcement team would extend its operations to major cities across the State to ensure compliance.
