Lagos Deploys Intelligent Transport System to Enhance Road Safety Charged 50,000 For Defaulters

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, has deployed four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites across the state to monitor and detect speeding as well as manage Lagos traffic flow more effectively.

Announcing this development at a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that these new installations would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other advanced Traffic Management Solution devices already in place.

Strategic Placement of ITS Checkpoints

Osiyemi explained that two of the newly installed ITS sites serve as speed detection checkpoints, strategically positioned to monitor and deter overspeeding—a major contributor to road accidents.

  • One checkpoint is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, where the speed limit is set at 80 km/h.
  • The second is installed at NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a lower speed limit of 60 km/h.

“These checkpoint sites have been strategically placed to ensure compliance with speed regulations and ultimately reduce road accidents caused by reckless driving,” Osiyemi stated.

E-Police Sites for Traffic Violations of Lagos Traffic

In addition to speed monitoring, two e-police sites have been deployed to detect a broad range of traffic infractions, including:

  • Running red lights
  • Lane indiscipline
  • Illegal U-turns
  • Reverse driving on highways

The e-police sites are located at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.

Strict Enforcement and Penalties of lagos traffic

Osiyemi emphasized that enforcement of these new measures would commence immediately. Motorists found violating traffic regulations through ITS detection will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) department. These messages will detail the nature of the violation along with the corresponding fines, which include:

  • N20,000 fine for running a red light
  • N50,000 fine for exceeding speed limits

However, Osiyemi clarified that the primary goal of this initiative is not to impose punitive measures but to promote responsible driving behavior and significantly reduce the rate of road accidents.

“This system is designed to encourage compliance with traffic regulations, save lives, protect property, and create a safer and more orderly transportation environment in Lagos,” he added.

High-Level Stakeholder Engagement

The briefing was attended by key stakeholders, including:

  • Olatunbosun Alake, Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology
  • Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation
  • Representatives from Huawei Technologies
  • Senior officials and directors from the Ministry of Transportation

With this initiative, the Lagos State Government continues its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance traffic management and ensure road safety across the state.
