The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially transitioned leadership as Prof. Mahmood Yakubu concluded his 10-year tenure and handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as Acting Chairman.
The handover took place during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja, where Prof. Yakubu announced he had begun his pre-retirement leave in line with the Constitution. He expressed confidence in Agbamuche-Mbu’s ability to lead the Commission effectively.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, in her acceptance speech, thanked Prof. Yakubu for his leadership and pledged to uphold the integrity and standards of the Commission.
Prof. Yakubu’s decade-long tenure saw major reforms, including the introduction of biometric voter registration and digital processes across Nigeria’s electoral system.
