NANS CRS Led by Ojikpong Christopher, Raises Alarm Over High Rent in Calabar – Calls for Govt Intervention

On this note, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Cross River State axis, write to bring to the esteemed attention a pressing issue affecting many residents, particularly students, in Calabar Metropolis – the alarming, appalling, lugubrious and apparently unnecessary increase in rent prices.

The escalating cost of accommodation in Calabar has become a significant burden for students, low-income earners, and ordinary citizens alike. Rent increments appear arbitrary and unaffordable for many, impacting their ability to access decent housing. This situation warrants urgent government intervention to protect vulnerable populations and promote affordable living conditions. We have three major concerns which include ;

– Affordability: High rents strain students and workers financially.
– Accessibility: Limited affordable housing options exist.
– Impact on Welfare: Housing costs affect overall quality of life.

We hereby recommend the following measures to the Government, State House of Assembly, ministry or f housing.
Rent Regulation: Consider policies and make laws to regulate unreasonable rent hikes.
Affordable Housing Initiatives: Explore partnerships for affordable housing projects.
Stakeholder Engagement: Dialogue with landlords, students, and relevant bodies to find balance.

We humbly request that the government, house of assembly, ministry of housing and relevant structures considers these concerns and explores measures to alleviate the hardship caused by rising rents in Calabar. NANS Cross River State is willing to collaborate on finding pragmatic solutions benefiting our constituents.
We also call on all other bodies and unions in cross river state to stand up and lend their voice to this very important issue as we have all been quiet on this for too long.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

CC: Governor of Cross river state
CC: Cross river state house of assembly
CC: Commissioner of housing Cross river state

ALUTA CONTINUA!!!
