Hon. Mercy Akpama Leads Female Legislators’ Outreach Event, Promotes Greater Women Participation in Politics

The Female Legislators Outreach event, organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with UN-WOMEN and the Government of Canada, was held on October 12, 2024. The event featured Hon. Mercy Akpama Ph.D., the woman legislator representing Yakurr 2 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly with over 358 participants at the venue.

The event focused on encouraging greater participation of women in politics and broader societal activities, emphasizing the critical role women play in community and national development.

Distinguished speakers from National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) highlighted the importance of empowering women to take more active roles in governance, stressing how their increased political involvement can drive local community transformation and shape a brighter national future.

In her address, Hon. Akpama shared her inspiring journey since taking office as the representative of Yakurr 2, outlining her achievements over her first year, including programs centered on education, social welfare, and economic empowerment. She also revealed several upcoming initiatives aimed at benefiting communities across Cross River State, not just Nko.

The outreach event also provided a platform for community leaders and citizens to voice their concerns and hopes for the future of Nko and the broader state. Youth and women leaders expressed their gratitude to Hon. Akpama for her continuous efforts and requested additional support for the educational sector to uplift their community.
