The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have declared a nationwide strike starting from Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
This comes after what the labor unions labeled as the government\’s \”failure\” to effectively put policies in place to allay Nigerians\’ pains as a result of the elimination of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit.
Joe Ajaero, the national president of the NLC, informed the members of the NEC during a virtual meeting of the National Executive Council on Zoom on Tuesday that a meeting had been held with TUC representatives to discuss next steps.
Ajaero noted that it was resolved that the two centres work together to make their stance known to the government.
Although initially several members opposed working with the TUC, there is currently no other option. Government has not taken any initiative. Therefore, this time, it will be a firm action.
The NLC\’s 21-day deadline expired last week.
Joe Ajaero, the NLC\’s national president, has expressed dissatisfaction that \”none of the demands made to the Federal Government had been addressed.\”
The union first observed a two-day nationwide warning strike on September 5 and 6 to show its readiness for the indefinite strike later in the month.
Among other things, the NLC and the TUC are asking for wage awards, implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions and allowances to public sector workers and a review of the minimum wage.
