The Chairman of the Cross River State Anti-Illegal Mining Committee, Prince Paul Okon Effiong, has finally addressed the reasons behind his recent invitation by the Inspector General of Police and the interrogations he has faced in recent weeks.
According to Prince Paul, his ordeal stems from a clampdown on illegal mining activities allegedly linked to former Akamkpa/Biase Federal House of Representatives member, Hon. Daniel Asuquo (aka Dansuki). The Committee had previously seized an excavator from an illegal mining site reportedly operated by Hon. Asuquo.
Allegations Against Prince Paul
Prince Paul Effiong Okon revealed that the allegations against him include claims that he extorted ₦10 million from Hon. Asuquo, and that he removed mining equipment from the site out of intimidation. He was also accused of using a letter from the Federal Ministry to interfere with Hon. Asuquo’s mining operations.
In response, Prince Paul firmly denied all allegations, swearing by his office that if Dansuki had not moved from his originally allocated site to another illegally, and if the committee had not issued several warnings and letters to vacate the area, then he would voluntarily step down as Chairman of the Anti-Illegal Mining Committee in Cross River State.
Prince Paul extended his gratitude to the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for his unwavering support throughout the investigation. He commended the governor for ensuring due process and for standing by the rule of law.
He also praised his team for remaining proactive and committed during his absence, stating that he was impressed to hear about their continued efforts in arresting illegal miners. He emphasized that neither he nor his team would be intimidated in the pursuit of justice.
Prince Paul concluded by asserting his innocence, stating that his hands are clean and that ongoing investigations are unfolding in his favor.
