South Africa Make World Cup History with 1-0 Victory Over South Korea, Reach Knockout Stage for First Time

Written by Mary Bassey

South Africa produced a historic performance on Wednesday, defeating South Korea 1-0 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for Bafana Bafana, who bounced back from a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Group A winners Mexico in their opening match to secure a place in the Round of 32.

After earning a crucial draw against the Czech Republic in their second group game, South Africa entered the decisive clash against South Korea knowing victory would secure progression. They delivered when it mattered most, with Thapelo Maseko scoring the match-winning goal in the 63rd minute after a well-worked attacking move.

South Korea dominated possession for long periods and created several chances, but South Africa’s disciplined defence and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stood firm to preserve the slender advantage. The Koreans, who surprisingly left captain Son Heung-min on the bench at kick-off, were unable to find an equaliser despite late pressure.

The win saw South Africa finish second in Group A with four points, behind Mexico, who topped the group with a perfect record. Bafana Bafana will now face co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 as they continue their dream World Cup campaign.

Speaking after the match, head coach Hugo Broos praised his players for their tactical discipline and determination, describing the achievement as the reward for years of hard work.

The result marks South Africa’s greatest achievement at the FIFA World Cup, having previously failed to progress beyond the group stage in their appearances in 1998, 2002 and as hosts in 2010.
