Malawian football star Temwa Chawinga has made history after becoming the first African woman to finish in the top 10 of the Women’s Ballon d’Or, marking a major milestone for African women’s football.
The forward, who plays for Kansas City Current in the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), has established herself as one of the leading players in women’s football through her impressive goal-scoring performances and individual achievements.
Chawinga’s rise to prominence includes winning the NWSL Most Valuable Player award and Golden Boot in both 2024 and 2025. She has also enjoyed success in China, where she won four consecutive league titles with Wuhan Jianghan University.
Her latest achievement further strengthens Malawi’s presence on the global football stage and provides inspiration for young African girls aspiring to become professional footballers.
Chawinga was among the players recognised in the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or rankings, alongside several established international stars. Her historic top-10 finish represents a breakthrough for African representation in the prestigious individual award.
Despite Africa producing several outstanding women footballers, no African woman has won the Women’s Ballon d’Or since the award was introduced in 2018.
Chawinga’s achievement is therefore a significant moment for Malawi and the wider African football community.
