TRAMRA Officials Allegedly Continue Vehicle Checks Despite Governor Otu’s Directive

Written by calabarGist

Motorists in Calabar have raised concerns after officials of the Cross River State Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) were reportedly seen carrying out vehicle compliance checks despite an earlier directive by the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Edet Otu, instructing the agency to focus strictly on traffic regulation.

According to eyewitness reports, the incident occurred on March 16 along the busy Marian Road axis, where TRAMRA officials allegedly stopped several motorists to inspect vehicle items such as tyres, fire extinguishers, windscreen wipers, and other compliance requirements.

Drivers and road users at the scene claimed that the exercise led to temporary traffic congestion as vehicles were stopped and checked along the road, creating a backlog of cars and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Some motorists expressed concern that the checks appeared to contradict the governor’s earlier directive, which reportedly instructed the agency to concentrate on managing traffic flow and reducing congestion on major roads across the state.

Residents around the Marian area also noted that the presence of enforcement officers conducting vehicle inspections in large numbers contributed to the build-up of traffic in the area during peak movement hours.

The development has sparked discussions among road users, with many calling for clearer enforcement guidelines to ensure that the operations of traffic management officials align with government directives.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the management of TRAMRA regarding the incident.
