REP. BASSEY AKIBA’S MESSAGE TO MARK WORLD HEALTH DAY 2025
Dear Nigerians,
World Health Day is an annual event celebrated on the 7th of April, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of global health and drawing attention to key health challenges. Organized by the World Health Organization(WHO), this day is crucial for individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to come together and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) related to health.
This year’s theme: “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures”, highlights the need to reduce avoidable deaths and promote the long-term health of mothers and newborns. Maternal and newborn health is crucial for several reasons, as it directly impacts the well-being of mothers, infants, families, and communities.

Health is a fundamental human right, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Yet, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, healthcare worker shortages, and persistent health disparities continue to impact the health and well-being of our citizens.
While the government continues to invest in improving healthcare infrastructure and services, the responsibility for health ultimately rests with each individual. We must take proactive steps to safeguard our health and well-being by adopting healthy lifestyles, prioritizing preventive healthcare measures, and seeking timely medical attention when necessary. It is only through collective action and mutual support that we can achieve the vision of a healthier Nigeria for all.
