What UNICAL Council Decided After Investigating 13 Lecturers

Written by Mary Bassey

The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has officially cleared 13 lecturers who were under investigation over allegations of academic misconduct, bringing an end to a case that had drawn attention within the university community.

The decision was reached during the Council’s 174th meeting after members carefully reviewed and adopted the report submitted by the Complaints/Disciplinary Committee set up to investigate the allegations.

The outcome was communicated in separate official letters signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Dr. Mrs. Icha Chukwuka.

The lecturers cleared of all allegations include Professors B. E. Udoh, N. O. Chiaghanam, and N. O. Egbe; Drs. V. C. Ikamaise, A. E. Egong, S. O. Paulinus, and B. S. Ibe; and Mr. E. E. Akwa, all from the Department of Radiography and Radiological Sciences.

Also exonerated were Drs. Mfon Akpaso, Anani Anani, and Nsikak Umoh, alongside Mr. Williams Nnenna and Mr. Cletus Ajang of the Department of Anatomy.

According to the Council, the allegations of examination misconduct against the lecturers could not be substantiated after a thorough review of the evidence and the committee’s findings. As a result, the affected academic staff were formally cleared of any wrongdoing.

While exonerating the lecturers, the Governing Council advised them to exercise greater diligence in the conduct of future examinations. It specifically directed that all unused sections of students’ answer booklets should be properly crossed out during examinations to strengthen transparency and prevent any suspicion of malpractice.

The decision reinforces the University’s commitment to due process, fairness, and accountability in handling disciplinary matters while maintaining the integrity of its academic and examination processes.
