In a rare display of compassion and humanity, the Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Rep. Bassey Akiba, earlier today, took a bold step towards inclusivity by distributing wheelchairs to Persons With Disabilities(PWD), in partnership with the Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre, Jos, Plateau State.
The event, which drew tears, cheers, and heartfelt prayers, took place under a simple but emotionally charged atmosphere. For many of the beneficiaries, it was a day that will forever remain etched in memory, a day when their cries were heard, their struggles acknowledged, and their humanity embraced.
In his remarks, Rep. Bassey Akiba, visibly moved by the moment, stated, “This gesture is not just about mobility, it is about restoring hope and promoting equity. Every citizen, regardless of physical ability, deserves the right to move freely, live independently, and participate fully in society.”
The atmosphere brimmed with gratitude and celebration. Songs of praise rang out as the visibly elated beneficiaries expressed profound appreciation. State Chairman, Joint Association of Persons With Disabilities, Prince Ekpenyong Essien, described it as a “rare gesture in these hard times,” applauding Rep. Bassey Akiba for bringing humanity back into governance.
Presenting the wheelchairs, the Media/Programme Director, Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre, Sandra Yilgwan, hailed Rep. Bassey Akiba’s humanitarian disposition, adding that his action today brought not only mobility, but visibility to a segment of the population that has long remained on the margins. For every wheelchair handed out, a life was lifted. For every word of encouragement spoken, a heart was healed.
As the event came to a close, the smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries told a deeper story, one of hope rekindled, burdens lightened, and lives touched by genuine servant leadership. In a world often marked by indifference, Rep. Bassey Akiba’s act shone as a radiant example of what it means to lead with empathy.
