In a bid to ensure the College of Nursing Sciences , Calabar is adequately prepared for the upcoming accreditation visit by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), for Nursing ND( National Diploma) and Resource inspection for HND Nursing, Special Assistant to the Governor of Cross River State on Nursing, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu, paid a working visit to the institution. The visit aimed to assess the progress of ongoing projects and initiatives designed to enhance the quality of nursing education and training.
During the inspection, Mr. Esu expressed profound gratitude to the Governor of Cross River State for prioritizing nursing training and education. He highlighted the significance of granting the college access to its budget implementation, which has facilitated a smooth transition from traditional school systems to collegiate systems. This transition, he noted, requires substantial infrastructural development and upgrading of facilities and structures.
The Special Assistant was particularly impressed with the institution’s entrepreneurial center, a critical requirement by the NBTE for the training of students. The centre provides students with opportunities to acquire skills in various fields, including fashion design, hairdressing, catering, and art design, among others. Mr. Esu commended the college management for this initiative, emphasizing its importance in equipping students with both academic knowledge and practical skills.
In an interactive session with the college management team, Mr. Esu discussed strategies to improve and regulate students’ academic performance in line with training requirements. He also congratulated the institution on its recent achievement: the college emerged as a winner to represent the state at the National Debate Competition, which will take place at the Federal Capital Territory at the Presidential Villa.
Responding, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Christy Essien Ekpe, represented by Council Member Mrs. Ekanem Ekpo expressed appreciation to the state government land mark support to nursing through appointments, access to budgets, provision of 32 seater coaster bus for students clinical, and many more. Dr Ekpe noted that such gestures reflect a true testament of the Governor’s policy in regards to the health of the citizenry.
On her part, the Provost of the College, Mrs. Joy Nelson thanked the Governor for his unwavering support, which has enabled the college to secure the initial provisional National Diploma status by the NBTE. She noted that the current phase of accreditation and resource verification would further enhance the institution’s facilities and equip students with the necessary skills.
The visit was concluded with an inspection of the entrepreneurship center and other facilities, led by the Registrar, Mrs. Bassey Okokon Etim, and other management staff.
This visit underscores the government’s commitment to nurturing a skilled and competent nursing workforce, capable of delivering high-quality healthcare services to the citizens of Cross River State.
