Healthcare Sector’s Environmental Impact Highlighted by Coco-Bassey Esu
At a recent workshop organized by the Cross River Women for Climate Action Project, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Nursing, called for urgent reforms in the healthcare sector to reduce its environmental footprint.

He noted that the healthcare sector contributes significantly to global environmental challenges, including:
- 25% of healthcare emissions globally
- 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions
- 50% of healthcare waste categorized as infectious or hazardous
“Healthcare professionals must take the lead in implementing sustainable practices such as renewable energy adoption, sustainable procurement, and waste reduction,” Esu emphasized during his presentation, which included actionable strategies and case studies.
Rachel Bassey Champions Women’s Role in Climate Action
Rachel Bassey, founder of Rabeal Eco-Revive and a key partner in the Cross River State Women for Climate Action Boot Camp, highlighted the urgent need to address climate change’s disproportionate impact on women. She stressed the importance of fostering women’s leadership and integrating them into climate decision-making processes.
“We must develop innovative solutions that empower women to drive the change we need,” Bassey stated.
