ENHANCING STANDARDS AND QUALITY ASSURANCE SERVICES : MINISTRY OF COMMERCE PARTNERS SON.

 

In furtherance of its mandate to regulate both domestic and foreign trade and promote economic growth,the Ministry of Commerce, Cross River State, has evolved robust collaboration with the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON).

In a one day general sensitization on SONCAP — facilitating quality imports into Nigeria for economic development, held at Transcorp Hotel, Calabar, organized by Standards Organization of Nigeria, the Commissioner for Commerce, Hon.(Mrs) Abigail Duke Orok,JP, emphasized the importance of a symbiotic relationship and liaison with the Ministry of Commerce and other relevant government agencies for the promotion and development of commerce in the state.

\”The organization at whose instance we gather here today is the Nation\’s apex standard body, established by ACT 56 of 1971 and empowered with the responsibilities of carrying out standardization and quality assurance activities amongst other functions within her mandate\”.

The essence, she said is to promote the production of quality products for sale within the onshore and offshore business environment, so as to ensure that consumers have value for their money and the acceptance of made in Nigeria products in the domestic and global markets .

The Government of Cross River State and Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) have enjoyed cordial working relationship with mutual benefits in diverse areas of importance, since the SON office was established in Calabar, the Honourable Commissioner posited.

The Ministry of Commerce, she said, is pivotal to the economy of Cross River State, moreso, it is essentially the building blocks that determine, to a great extent, the direction of the economy.

The leadership of Standards Organization of Nigeria reiterated its continued support and synergy with the Ministry to promote consumer confidence and global competitiveness of Nigerian products and services through standardization and quality assurance.
