Former U.S. house of representative speaker Nancy Pelosi involved in an accident and hospitalized after getting injured during a trip to Luxembourg, her office said in a statement on Friday.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi is receiving excellent care from doctors and medical staff,” said Ian Krager, spokesperson for the California Democrat.
He explained that Pelosi was in Luxembourg for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when she got injured during an official event and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
It is still unclear how Pelosi was injured or how serious her injuries are.
“She continues to work but regrets missing the rest of the CODEL events meant to honor the bravery of our service members during one of the greatest moments of American heroism,” said Krager. “Speaker Emerita Pelosi extends her gratitude and praise to our veterans and thanks the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their role in World War II and their efforts to bring peace to Europe.”
Krager added that Pelosi was “both personally and officially honored” to join the delegation to Luxembourg. Many in the group, including Pelosi herself, have family ties to World War II. Her uncle, Johnny, was among those who served.
“She is eager to return to the U.S. soon,” He concludes
At 84, Pelosi remains a key figure in the Democratic Party, even after stepping down as House Speaker in 2023. She has been influential in urging President Joe Biden to step aside from the 2024 presidential race while frequently criticizing President-elect Donald Trump and voicing concerns about his upcoming administration’s policies.
This marks the second workplace injury involving an older lawmaker this week. On Tuesday, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, 81, slipped and sprained his wrist following a Republican lunch on Capitol Hill, according to his office.
