Following recent developments involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the International Human Rights Protection Service has urged Nigerians to fully cooperate with the commission to enable it to execute its mandate effectively.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, the Special Envoy to West Africa, Ambassador Dr. Charles Omini, emphasized the critical role the EFCC plays in curbing financial crimes and promoting accountability in the country.
Ambassador Omini commended the efforts made by the EFCC so far but stressed the need for even more robust action to address the growing concerns over corruption. He noted that corruption remains one of the most significant impediments to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, undermining public trust and eroding the rule of law.
He called on the Nigerian public, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to work hand-in-hand with the EFCC, as cooperation is crucial in ensuring that the commission can carry out thorough investigations and bring offenders to justice.
“The fight against corruption requires not just government action but the active involvement of every citizen,” Ambassador Omini remarked. “The EFCC must be allowed the freedom to perform its duties without interference, and Nigerians must support this process by providing relevant information and standing against corrupt practices in their communities.”
Furthermore, Ambassador Omini encouraged the EFCC to continue strengthening its internal mechanisms to ensure transparency and integrity within the commission itself, as this will boost public confidence in its operations.
He also advocated for international collaboration, suggesting that partnerships with global financial intelligence agencies could help trace illicit funds and prosecute cross-border financial crimes more effectively.
In conclusion, Dr. Omini reiterated the International Human Rights Protection Service’s commitment to supporting anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria and across West Africa. He urged the EFCC to maintain its momentum and not relent in its pursuit of a corruption-free Nigeria, as the success of these efforts would greatly improve the nation’s global reputation and contribute to sustainable development.
