The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has recently clarified its stance on bread safety in Nigeria.
The agency dissociated itself from a comment suggesting that Nigerians should avoid eating bread made and sold in the country.

The controversy started when NAFDAC South-west Coordinator, Roseline Ajayi, stated that bread sold in markets are failing laboratory tests due to the use of a sweetener called saccharine.

NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, quickly responded to the misconception.
He corrected that the agency never suggested that Nigerians should avoid bread baked and sold in Nigeria.
Adeyeye reassured the public that NAFDAC remains committed to safeguarding public health.

NAFDAC emphasizes that the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) and the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA) both prohibit the use of saccharine in bread.

In light of the clarification, Nigerians can continue to consume bread made and sold in the country, but with caution.
