A suspected robber has been beaten to death by residents following an alleged midnight robbery incident in Calabar South, Cross River State.
According to reports, the incident occurred at Ibesikpo Street, an area largely inhabited by students of the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), now known as UNICROSS.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that three suspected robbers broke into the apartment of a female student during the night. While two of the suspects reportedly escaped with her belongings, including an iPhone and other valuables, the victim managed to hold on to one of the robbers.
During a struggle to escape, the suspect allegedly stabbed the student in the neck with a pair of scissors. Despite her injuries, the victim raised an alarm, attracting the attention of nearby residents.
The injured student was later rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, while angry residents descended on the suspect and reportedly beat him to death.
At the time of filing this report, the lifeless body of the suspect was said to be lying near the Ibesikpo Slaughter Market, close to Calabar Prison, popularly known as Afokang Prison.
Residents of the area have appealed to relevant authorities to urgently deploy the Cross River State Waste Management Agency (CUDA) and security agencies to evacuate the body and restore order in the community.
The incident has once again raised concerns over rising insecurity and the dangers of jungle justice in urban communities.
