World Humanitarian Day 2025: Cross River State Joins Global Celebration as Commissioner Sends Message to Cross Riverians

Cross River State has joined the rest of the world to mark World Humanitarian Day 2025, with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, led by Dr. Helen Isamoh-Egodo, organizing a sensitization walk across the city of Calabar.

The awareness walk brought together donors, development partners, and organizations including the UNHCR, the Red Cross, the Ministry of Sports, the Department of Social Welfare, civil society organizations, youth groups, and community stakeholders. The event served as a platform to emphasize humanitarian values, discuss challenges confronting humanitarian workers, and encourage community members to adopt humanitarian lifestyles in their daily lives.

In her address, Dr. Helen Isamoh-Egodo, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, expressed deep appreciation to Cross Riverians for their support and participation. She acknowledged the sacrifices of humanitarian workers worldwide, noting that while many face grave dangers and even death in the line of duty, countless others continue to work tirelessly to ensure that essential humanitarian services reach the most vulnerable.

The Commissioner also commended His Excellency, Governor Bassey Edet Otu, for his visionary leadership in promoting humanitarian interventions across the state, particularly in the areas of poverty alleviation, social welfare, and community development. She further extended her gratitude to the First Lady of Cross River State, Dr. Eyoanwan Otu, describing her as a “mother of humanity” whose compassion, mentorship, and dedication to the welfare of the people continue to inspire hope.

Dr. Isamoh-Egodo concluded by calling on all Cross Riverians to embrace the spirit of humanity beyond government initiatives.

“Humanitarian service is not just the work of government—it is everyone’s responsibility. If each of us commits to showing kindness, compassion, and selflessness in our daily lives, we will create a better, safer, and more supportive environment for all,” she said.

The commemoration highlighted the global theme of World Humanitarian Day, reinforcing the message that “every act of humanity counts.”
