At the inauguration of councilors across the state, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Cross River State, first recognized the Honourable Commissioner, Hon Victor Felix Idam, alongside other dignitaries present. She called on the newly sworn-in councilors to represent their wards diligently, work together in unity, and focus on driving growth in their communities.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Linus Edet, Member representing Akamkpa II, urged the councilors to see their new offices as a call to serve the people, not themselves. According to him, “Life is not about money; whatever lifestyle you choose today will speak for you tomorrow. Every one of you must project yourselves positively and respect the authority of the mandate given to you.” He further encouraged the councilors to serve with delight and commitment, appreciating the Commissioner for providing such an opportunity and urging all to remain proactive.
Also addressing the gathering, Mr. Darlington, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, advised the councilors to devote adequate time to their responsibilities. He reminded them that their positions are not for personal gain but a platform to serve the people who elected them. “May your rulership never make those who elected you regret their decision,” he cautioned.
In his keynote address, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Hon. Victor Felix Idam, reassured the councilors of his leadership and guidance, emphasizing that the forum was created to manage and coordinate all councilors across the state, the largest group inaugurated so far by the government. He urged them to live lives that reflect maturity and fatherly responsibility.
Hon. Victor Felix called on the inaugurated councilors to remain 100% transparent in communication and in the distribution of government benefits to their people. He further stressed the importance of respect for their council chairmen, collaboration within the councils, and accountability to the electorate. “My doors are always open for questioning, contributions, and opinions,” he added.
The Honourable Commissioner Victor Felix Idam also reassured them of the unwavering support of the state government, noting that the Governor has deep love for his councilors, and this initiative of raising young men and women to represent the people was a deliberate step toward inclusive governance.
After his speech, Hon. Victor Felix Idam outlined the possible roles and responsibilities of the Cross River State Councilors Forum, with Magdalene Ekpe appointed as Chairman of one of the Forum among other executives.
