The Director General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency Deaconess Mrs. Abasioffiong Offiong has left no stone unturned in the fight against the ongoing cholera outbreak as she continues to storm the various communities affected carrying out massive sensitization and awareness exercise. The DG has today visited the Olulumo Community (Okuni village) to continue the sensitization and awareness exercise.

Speaking during the visit, the DG assured the Olulumo people that government will continue to intervene while thanking the traditional rulers for receiving and hosting her and the team within a short period of time.

\”Let me start by thanking the Chiefs and the entire community for hosting and welcoming me and my team at a short notice. We\’re here to carryout massive sensitization on the cholera outbreak. While we continue to pray to God to help us, we must do the best we can to address this outbreak by first practicing good hygiene, put into consideration the kind of water we drink, regular hand washing, covering all our cooked food, since we depend on our natural source of water for drinking we should always boil before we can drink to kill all the microorganisms.

I\’ll wish to also solicit with the Chiefs to help make laws that could help promote good hygiene while we will continue to sensitize and create awareness to our people.

On her part, the Vice Chairman of Ikom LGA Hon. Alice Erem who spoke on behalf of the Chairman of Ikom LGA Hon. Kingsley Egume reiterated that her Olulumo people must first practice good hygiene, regular hand washing, avoiding of open defecation and put into consideration the kind of water we drink as cholera is a waterborne disease and kills faster than expected.

The State Epidemiologist, Pst. Inyang Ekpenyong who was also in the medical team emphasized more on personal hygiene and portable drinking water while assuring the community that government will continue to send support and the issue of portable drinking water will be reported same to the state government and necessary actions will be implemented.

More sensitization and awareness creation was carried out by other members of the team such as Dr Edward Ebu, director of environmental services, Mrs. Anthonia Owan, PHC Director Ikom, Mr Inyang, WASHCOM coordinator Ikom, amongst others.

Thanking the DG and her team, Chief Obaji Agbor and Mr. Onor Eba both thanked the government of CRS who through the director general has responded swiftly to the cry of the Olulumo people with an assurance that the okuni community will continue to carry out more sensitization and awareness while making community laws that will promote good hygiene to keep the people safe.

Highlights of the event was the donation of more medical commodities, pictorial lectures on how to manage cholera amongst others.
