UBA National Essay Competition 2024; 16 year old wins 7.5 million scholarship grant.

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc recently hosted the grand finale of its National Essay Competition.

Tehilah Oluchukwu Isimah, a 16-year-old student of Everest Height International Academy, Gwagwalada, Abuja, emerge as the winner.

Organizers of the UBA National Essay Competition officially declared Oluchukwu the winner at the grand finale and award ceremony, which took place at UBA House, Marina, Lagos, on Tuesday..

She is the sixth female student to win the star prize in six years even as fewer male students made the top 20 finalists invited to the award ceremony.

 

About the UBA National Essay Competition.

The UBA National Essay competition, is an annual event with this year’s edition being the 14th in the series.

It specifically designed to actively promote education and foster a robust reading culture among senior secondary school students across the nation.

The competition is one of the major UBA intervention initiatives on education domiciled under its social arm, UBA Foundation.

The UBA National Essay Competition is a testament to the bank’s commitment to education and its belief in the potential of African youth.

As the competition continues to grow and evolve, it is clear that it will remain a vital platform for promoting education and empowering young minds.

Tehilah Oluchukwu Isimah’s Winning Essay.

Oluchukwu, an SS3 student, defeated Christabel Obinna-Chukwu, a 15-year-old student of Regina Pacis College, Abuja, and Greatness Emediong, a student of Nigerian Christian Institution, Akwa Ibom State, to claim the top prize.

Her winning essay, which focused on the topic

“Examine the causes, consequences, and solutions of Japa Syndrome in Nigeria,”

impressing the judges with its depth and insight.

Oluchukwu, who aspires to become a surgeon, credited her success to hard work and dedication. She noted that she had to burn the midnight oil to research and write her essay.

Her mother, Mrs. Comfort Isimah, accompanied her to the award ceremony and expressed pride in her daughter’s achievement

 

The Rewards from the UBA National Essay Competition.

Oluchukwu was rewarded with a N7.5 million scholarship grant to study at any university of her choice in Africa.

She was also given a trophy, laptop, certificate of merit, and a school bag.

Christabel and Emediong, who came second and third, respectively, received N5 million and N3.5 million scholarship grants, respectively. As well as a laptop, certificate of merit, and a school bag each.

The UBA National Essay Competition has bee hailed as a platform that promotes education and healthy competition among secondary school students in Nigeria and other African countries.

The competition has produced many winners over the years.

Many of whom have gone on to make meaningful contributions to national development.

UBA National Essay Competition Judges Criticizes other contestants.

Prof. Ini Uko, one of the panel of judges, noted that many of the entries were poor.

Most students demonstrating a lack of familiarity with national issues.

She emphasized the need for students to focus on their studies.

And also develop critical thinking skills rather than being engrossed in social media.
