UNGA ’24: C’River Pushes Gender Equality and Human Rights at Women HUB Meeting

 

The Cross River State delegation to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, on Monday, participated with parties collaborating with international stakeholders at the UN Headquarters in New York for the launch of the ‘Generations United For Tomorrow’ initiative with the high-level meeting with the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum

Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Reverend Eyoanwan Otu, led the Cross River State delegation to the high-level meeting with the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum. The meeting focused on advancing gender equality, particularly for girls, strategic partnerships, education, and human rights integration.

The “Sustainable Future For All” summit, hosted by IOM, Africa Together, and Allison Aloevera Wheeler of the United Nations Foundation, tackled pressing youth challenges by combining the wisdom and experience of the old with youthful passion and innovation to bridge the generational divide.

Speaking at the launch, Reverend Otu emphasized the Cross River State government’s dedication to gender equality, citing innovative programs empowering the girl child, women and children. A significant milestone is the recent approval of a two-month extension for paid maternity leave from four to six months, demonstrating its commitment to supporting families.

The wife of the Governor was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Mainstreaming; Dr. Inyang Asibong, and Mrs. Mary Ekpere-Eta, former Director General of the National Centre for Women Development, in advocating for urgent attention to gender disparity. The high-level gathering drew First Ladies from Kwara, Osun, Ogun, Imo and Zamfara states, along with representatives from Nigeria, Bosnia, Zimbabwe, the United States, and Uganda.

Key deliberations focused on safeguarding human rights and dignity to achieve sustainable development. Discussions also centered on finding mentors and sponsors for girls and youth, eliminating gender disparity, and combating human trafficking.
