Unical Forum of Faculty Presidents Rejects Hike in school fees

\"THE

Unical Forum of Faculty Presidents writes with utmost veneration expressing their dissatisfaction and vehemently repudiates the school fee hike or proposed school charges by the management of the university of Calabar. We appreciate the nostrums the management under the leadership of our beloved Vice chancellor Prof. Florence Banku Obi has initiated to transmute and add humungous value to the university of Calabar but an exorbitant or over the odds increment of school charges at this point is hot propitious to the students as it has dire consequences and harsh multiplier effects.

We believe that such a decision would have detrimental effects on the student
community and undermine the principles of affordable and accessible education
that our institution stands for.

In an economy that is lethargic and surviving is apparently an onerous task
increasing school fees exorbitantly will not only send preponderance of Nigerian
students home but the future of our dear state will be in menace. Therefore, we
respectfully demand for a return to the initial amount.

it is Important to recall that Fees was increased in 2021 with a lot of promises
made to curtail internal and external challenges faced by the University of Calabar and also the provision of Adequate welfare for the students. But over 70% of this promises weren\’t fulfilled rather they\’ve been seen marginally.

It is important to acknowledqe the financial challenges that many students already face in pursuing higher education. In recent years, the cost of education has risen exponentially, placing a huge burden on students and their families. A further increase in school fees would aggravate this issue, making education unaffordable
for even greater number of students.

This could potentially lead to a decline in
enrollment rates and hinder the university\’s mission of providing quality education to all deserving individuals.

Furthermore, Education should not be a privilege reserved only for those who
can afford it. Education should not be a monopoly of the rich but rather a right
accessible to all.

By raising fees, we risk losing talented individuals who possess the potential to contribute significantly to our academic community and society as a whole. it is essential to address the lack of transparency and consultation in the decision-making process.

As students union body in this institution, students should have a voice and be actively involved in discussions reqarding matters that directly impact them. We the Unical Forum of Faculty Presidents urge the university management to engage in open dialogue with the student (general congress) to understand the concerns and explore alternative solutions that prioritize students interests.

In conclusion, we strongly urge the university management to reconsider its
decision of increasing school fees. We believe that by doing so, the institution will uphold its commitment to affordable and accessible education, foster a diverse and inclusive student community, and ensure the long-term sustainability of our esteemed university.

Lastly, we are Reaffirming our stand, a big \”NO TO FEES INCREMENT\”

Thanks.
